The Centre Ivanhoe originally opened in April 1937. It was known then as the Heidelberg Town Hall. Designed by Peck & Kemter with A C Leith & Bartlett it was inspired by the Hilversum Town Hall in the Netherlands. The architects received the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects Street Architecture Medal in 1939 for their work. The Centre Ivanhoe is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. It’s described as the finest example of interwar brick Moderne style in Victoria.
But The Centre Ivanhoe is more than just beautiful architecture. It’s a place where history unfolds. Soon after its opening the council organised public dances. Bill Glennon managed these wildly popular events. An 18-piece band played in the Great Hall. Two smaller rooms the Streeton and Condor offered different musical styles. The Streeton featured old-time music while the Condor played jazz. Free buses ferried people from Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Over 2000 people attended Saturday night dances. Many locals remember meeting their spouses at the ‘Berg as it was affectionately known. These dances continued until the 1970s.
