“Fancy a pint and a laugh?” I ask. We are standing outside The Camden Head. This pub is one of Camden’s oldest. It was established in 1787. The Camden Head has a rich history. It has seen many changes over the years.

Once known as “Liberties” for a short time, it reverted to The Camden Head. Publican George Soole ran it back in 1869. The Camden Head is not the one in Islington on Camden Passage. That’s a different pub.

The Camden Head’s architecture remains largely unchanged. A photo from 1903 shows its original appearance. A copy of this photo hangs inside. You can also find it at the Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre Catalogue. The photo shows how similar the building is today.

The Camden Head has hosted many notable events. It was an official venue for the Camden Crawl festival. It also hosts events during the annual Camden Fringe. Richard Tyrone Jones performed here in 2011.

Synthpop band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool filmed a video here. They shot their video for “Dance The Way I Feel” upstairs. In September 2014, the pub relaunched its upstairs as Camden Comedy Club.

This pub is known for its local atmosphere. It is also a popular comedy venue. Many famous comedians have performed here. Alan Carr, Stephen Merchant, Lee Kern and Bob Mortimer have all graced its stage.

The Camden Head can get very busy. It’s especially crowded on Saturday evenings. The music can be loud. But it has a late license, staying open until 3 am on weekends. At quieter times, you can find a large open-plan space. There is a pool table and comfortable couches.

Upstairs, there is a bookable function room. It’s suitable for small clubs. The Camden Head also hosts acoustic gigs and comedy nights.

At the bar, you can find a selection of ales. Adnam’s and London Pride are sometimes available. Camden Town Pale Ale is on draught. You can also find the usual lagers. Sagres, Leffe, and Hoegaarden are on tap. The service is friendly. The Camden Head is accessible. There is a shallow step to get in.
