In 1902, a plot of land at the corner of The Brent and St. Vincent’s Road in Dartford was purchased for £330. This marked the humble beginnings of what we now know as The Brent Methodist Church. This wasn’t just any land purchase. It was a testament to the vision of the Spital Street congregation, who dreamed of a new Wesleyan Chapel. Their dream came to fruition in 1906 when the original chapel opened its doors. The Brent Methodist Church founders, however, were forward-thinking. They knew a larger church would eventually be needed. They wisely reserved the front of the plot for this future expansion, renting out the remaining land as allotments to generate income. This foresight proved invaluable decades later. In 1960, the East Hill and Brent congregations merged, selling the East Hill Church buildings. The proceeds funded the construction of a new church on the vacant land at The Brent, seamlessly connecting it to the existing 1906 chapel. This new structure was officially inaugurated on November 17, 1962, marking a new chapter in the church’s history. The original 1906 Wesleyan Chapel, a testament to the early congregation’s dedication, now serves as one of the church halls. Between 1910 and 1995, various extensions and renovations enhanced The Brent Methodist Church, reflecting the evolving needs of its community. The church’s mission, however, remained constant: to invite people to know and follow Jesus Christ. From its inception, The Brent Methodist Church has strived to serve the Newtown community in Dartford, embodying the love of Jesus through outreach and providing a welcoming space for worship and fellowship.
