Welcome to The Barn in Minneapolis. It is more than just a basketball arena. The Barn is a landmark steeped in tradition.
Originally named the Minnesota Field House, The Barn opened its doors in 1928. Imagine the excitement as the Gophers basketball team finally had a place to call home after years in the campus Armory and Kenwood Armory.
In 1950, the arena was remodeled. It was then renamed Williams Arena. This was in honor of Henry L. Williams, the legendary football coach who led the team from 1900 to 1921.
What makes The Barn so unique? It is one of the few remaining college basketball arenas with a raised floor. This unusual design places the court two feet above the ground. Team benches and scorer’s tables sit below the playing surface. The first row fans find themselves almost at knee-level with the players.
From 1950 to 1971, The Barn boasted the largest capacity of any collegiate basketball arena in the nation. Over 18,000 fans could pack the stands. They created an electric atmosphere that intimidated visiting teams.
The Barn hosted the 1951 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament championship game. It also hosted the 1964 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament Mideast Regional. The arena has seen its share of historic moments.
For 43 years, The Barn was also home to the Golden Gopher hockey team. Can you imagine the sound of skates and cheers echoing through these halls? In 1985, the hockey side was renamed Mariucci Arena, honoring Gopher hockey legend John Mariucci.
Though the hockey team has since moved to a new arena, the memories linger. The old Mariucci Arena was remodeled into the Sports Pavilion. It now hosts volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics.
Even Hollywood came calling. Scenes from the 1978 film Ice Castles were filmed right here in The Barn.
In 2009, the original playing surface was replaced. The Barn received its first major upgrade since the early 1990s.
Today, The Barn continues to be a vibrant venue for Gophers basketball. It is a place where memories are made and legends are born.
