The Balme Library isn’t just a library. It’s the heart of the University of Ghana. Established in 1948 it’s a testament to the nation’s commitment to education. Named after David Mowbray Balme the university’s first principal this library has grown steadily. It’s now the largest in the University of Ghana Library System.
Walk in and you’ll find more than just books. The Balme Library boasts a wealth of resources. There are online databases with countless e-journals and e-books. It houses special collections. The Africana Library is one such treasure trove. It contains books and periodicals focusing on Africa. The Arabic Library caters to students studying Arabic. The United Nations Depository Library holds a vast collection of UN publications.
Look around you. Notice the different sections. The ground floor contains the Reference Hall. Here you can find encyclopedias and dictionaries. You can also borrow and return books here. The East and West Stacks house the main book collections. The mezzanine floors hold more books and periodicals. Upstairs is the Periodicals Hall displaying current magazines and journals. There’s a Students’ Reference Library with multiple copies of current textbooks. These are for reference only.
The Balme Library isn’t just about books though. It offers many services. You can get your books bound here. Photocopying services are also available. You can even consult past examination questions and theses. The library also conducts workshops and user education sessions. Off-campus database access is available for registered students and staff.
