A wave of spiritual energy washes over you. You stand before The Apostolic Reformed Church in Accra. Its story begins not here but in the fervor of the 1904-1905 Welsh revival. A Pentecostal movement ignited a global flame. This flame spread to Ghana. The Apostolic Church found fertile ground in the Gold Coast.

The Apostolic Reformed Church is one branch of a larger tree. Its roots trace back to the Apostolic Church in Bradford England. Missionaries like Pastor James and Mrs Sophia McKeown arrived in Asamankese Ghana in 1935. They brought with them a Pentecostal faith emphasizing the Holy Spirit’s power.

However the path wasn’t smooth. Doctrinal differences led to splits. Peter Anim Newman a leader in the early Ghanaian church formed the Christ Apostolic Church in 1938. Further disagreements resulted in the formation of the Church of Pentecost in 1962. The Apostolic Reformed Church emerged as another offshoot of this lineage. It’s a testament to the dynamism and sometimes divisive nature of religious movements.

The church in Accra wasn’t established overnight. Pioneers like Pastors Lartey Adotey AS Mallet CK Diaba and Elder QAL Quarshie laid its foundation in 1944. The church grew rapidly under Pastor Anaman’s leadership. By 1984 it became the denomination’s headquarters. Many missionaries from the UK further strengthened its presence.

The Apostolic Reformed Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living community. It reflects the enduring impact of the Welsh revival on Ghanaian Christianity. It represents the resilience of faith in the face of internal divisions. The church in Accra stands tall a beacon of spirituality and community. It continues to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Its story is one of both triumph and tribulation a testament to the enduring power of faith.
