Have you heard of a church that journeyed across a city? The Anglican Church of Saint Barnabas, right here in Mount Eden, has just such a story. It’s not just a place of worship, it’s a piece of living history. The Anglican Church of Saint Barnabas began its life in 1849, not here, but in Mechanics Bay. Originally designed by Frederick Thatcher, it served the Maori community who came to Auckland to trade. Imagine, a bustling marketplace near the water, and this little wooden church offering a moment of peace. The church was one of the “Selwyn Churches,” simple structures built throughout New Zealand. By 1877, the Anglican community in Mount Eden was growing. Services were being held in a local schoolroom, but a proper church was needed. Instead of building anew, they decided to move the entire St. Barnabas Church. Dismantled and loaded onto bullock-drawn wagons, it made the slow journey across Auckland to its current home. The first service at this new location was held on October 6, 1878, a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the early community. The Anglican Church of Saint Barnabas wasn’t just relocated, it was reborn. Over the years, the church underwent several expansions. The congregation grew, necessitating a larger space. In 1886, the roof was raised, aisles were added, and the building was lengthened. Later, in 1908, a brick sanctuary and transepts replaced the original wooden ones. The original wooden nave is still part of the current structure, a tangible link to its humble beginnings. Today, you can still see echoes of its past in the stained glass windows, donated in the early 20th century. They stand as vibrant testaments to the enduring spirit of the Anglican Church of Saint Barnabas. As you stand here, before this blend of old and new, consider the journey. It’s a story of adaptation, growth, and a community’s commitment to their faith. The Anglican Church of Saint Barnabas stands not just as a building, but as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in shaping Auckland’s history.
