Behold the American Doughboy Bringing Home Victory. This magnificent bronze statue stands before you a testament to the resilience of the American spirit. It’s a powerful symbol isn’t it?

Created by Alonzo Victor Lewis in 1932 this twelve-foot-tall sculpture wasn’t always so popular. Originally commissioned in 1921 as a plaster model titled American Doughboy Bringing Home the Bacon the statue faced immediate controversy. Its cheerful expression and the German helmets initially slung over the soldier’s shoulders offended many particularly German-American citizens. They felt the image did not accurately represent the war experience.

The initial name too was considered insensitive. The name was changed. Over time the helmets mysteriously vanished likely removed because of the continuing objections. Even the bayonet on the Doughboy’s rifle was later removed. Think about that. This seemingly straightforward memorial has a layered history. It reflects evolving social attitudes and sensitivities towards war remembrance.

In 1994 the Smithsonian Institution’s Save Outdoor Sculpture program deemed the American Doughboy Bringing Home Victory in need of urgent treatment. The statue’s condition was poor. Years later in 1998 the sculpture found a new home at Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park. This wasn’t its first location.

Interestingly enough one of the missing German helmets was rediscovered around 2018. Imagine the surprise of the cemetery operations manager. It was found in a box at the cemetery itself. It remains a mysterious artifact. The second helmet however remains missing.

The American Doughboy Bringing Home Victory is more than just a statue. It’s a window into Seattle’s past. It shows the city’s shifting perspectives on war and its complex relationship with its own history. Take a moment to truly appreciate this piece of living history. Let the Doughboy’s quiet strength speak to you.
