Here stands The Alarm a bronze statue in Lincoln Park Chicago. It’s more than just a sculpture. It’s a poignant memorial to the Ottawa Nation. Commissioned in 1880 by Martin Ryerson it was dedicated in 1884. Ryerson a successful businessman held deep respect for the Ottawa people. He’d forged friendships with them years earlier while trading furs. The Alarm depicts an Ottawa family. A father stands alert his dog by his side. His wife and baby huddle at his feet. They look out as if anticipating danger. The detail is incredible. You can see the feathers on the arrows. You can almost feel the texture of the fabric holding the baby. The original bronze base panels were stolen. They’ve been replaced with granite tablets. Each tablet depicts scenes of Ottawa life. The Peace Pipe The Corn Dance Forestry and The Hunt. This wasn’t John J Boyle’s first sculpture but it was his first major commission. Boyle spent time studying Native Americans in North Dakota to ensure accuracy. He wanted to depict their strength and peacefulness. He didn’t want to perpetuate harmful stereotypes. The Alarm was initially near the Lincoln Park Zoo. It was moved to its current location in 1974. The move made way for a new zoo building. The Alarm is now a powerful symbol. It’s a tribute to a culture. It’s a reminder of a history often overlooked. It’s one of the oldest sculptures in Chicago. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of the Ottawa people and the man who honored them. Take a moment to reflect on the story. Let the watchful gaze of The Alarm resonate within you.
