Completed in 1843, this is the Thames Tunnel Air Shaft. It stands as a testament to Victorian engineering ingenuity. The Thames Tunnel was the first tunnel successfully constructed under a navigable river. The tunnel connects Rotherhithe and Wapping beneath the River Thames. Marc Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed it. They used the elder Brunel’s newly invented tunnelling shield.
Originally intended for horse-drawn carriages, the Thames Tunnel became a pedestrian attraction. Imagine paying a penny to stroll beneath the Thames. People marveled at what some called the eighth wonder of the world. In 1869, the tunnel was converted into a railway tunnel for the East London Line. Today, it is part of the London Overground network.
The need for a new land connection across the Thames grew in the early 19th century. Ralph Dodd’s attempt to build a tunnel between Gravesend and Tilbury failed in 1799. Between 1805 and 1809, Cornish miners tried to dig a tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping. They also failed due to difficult ground conditions. Marc Brunel, however, refused to give up. He patented the tunnelling shield in 1818. This was a revolutionary advance. In 1823, he proposed a tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping.
Construction began in 1825 with the sinking of a large shaft on the south bank at Rotherhithe. This shaft was 50 feet in diameter. Workers removed soil manually. The entire shaft gradually sank under its own weight. The shaft became stuck at one point. Extra weight was added to make it continue its descent.
The tunnelling shield was the key to Brunel’s construction. It consisted of twelve frames divided into thirty-six chambers. Each chamber housed one workman. The shield supported the unlined ground. This reduced the risk of collapses. The work was slow. It progressed at only one to eight feet a week. The company allowed sightseers to view the shield in operation to earn income.
The excavation was hazardous. The Thames Tunnel flooded suddenly in 1827. Isambard Kingdom Brunel repaired the hole by throwing bags filled with clay into the breach. Another flood occurred in 1828. Six men died. Isambard narrowly escaped.
In 1834, Marc Brunel raised enough money to continue construction. The old shield was dismantled. A new, improved shield was assembled. The remaining tunnelling was completed in 1841. The Thames Tunnel was fitted with lighting, roadways, and spiral staircases. It finally opened to the public in 1843.
Although a marvel of engineering, the Thames Tunnel was not a financial success. Proposals to accommodate wheeled vehicles failed due to cost. It became a popular tourist attraction. People paid a penny to pass through. The American traveller William Allen Drew described it as an underground marketplace. Others viewed it as a haunt of prostitutes and thieves.
In 1865, the East London Railway Company purchased the Thames Tunnel. The first train ran through it in 1869. The tunnel became part of the London Underground. It continued to be used for goods services until 1962.
In 1995, the Thames Tunnel was listed as a Grade II* structure. It was recognized for its architectural importance. The Thames Tunnel is a reminder of Victorian innovation.
Nearby in Rotherhithe, Brunel’s engine house is now the Brunel Museum. In the 1860s, the Rotherhithe entrance shaft became a ventilation shaft. In 2011, a concrete raft was built near the bottom of the shaft. This space is now part of the museum. It hosts concerts and events. A rooftop garden sits on top of the shaft. In 2016, the entrance hall opened as an exhibition space. A staircase provided access to the shaft for the first time in over 150 years. Today, the Thames Tunnel Air Shaft is a key exhibit. It is a testament to engineering history and ingenuity.
