Did you know that the first acupuncture school in Texas was founded right here in Austin? Texas Health and Science University, or THSU as it’s commonly known, has a rich history dating back to 1990. Founded by Lisa Ping-Hui Tsao Lin and her husband Paul Lin, it originally started as the Texas Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university quickly became a pioneer in the field. It was the first school in Texas approved by the Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners to offer instruction in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Imagine the excitement and anticipation as it opened its doors to its first cohort of students, eager to delve into the world of ancient healing practices. THSU continued to expand its reach and impact over the years. In 1997, it was granted the authority to award the Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine degree, a significant milestone in its journey. The university didn’t stop there. THSU further solidified its reputation as a leader in the field by receiving accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools in 2012. Today, Texas Health and Science University stands as a testament to the vision of its founders, a place where traditional Chinese medicine thrives, and a new generation of healers is trained to serve the community.
