Tucked away in the Tännichtgrund, a valley near Dresden, lies the story of the Teufelsmühle. The Teufelsmühle, or Devil’s Mill, wasn’t named for an actual mill. It was named for the mysterious scattering of large boulders. These stones, with no obvious source, sparked legends. People couldn’t explain their presence without a nearby rock massif. They didn’t know about glaciers carrying boulders in prehistoric times. So, the legend arose that these were the remnants of a mill built by the devil himself. The Teufelsmühle was originally a real watermill, built in 1553 east of Weistropp by Bernhard von Rothschütz. The mill’s story took a dark turn with its miller, Andreas Reiff, who owned the mill from 1709. Reiff was rumored to have made a pact with the devil. This pact supposedly granted him powers of sorcery, which he used to torment the local pastor and residents of Weistropp. Disaster struck the Teufelsmühle twice. It was set on fire in 1853. Then, in 1872, it burned down completely. The decision was made not to rebuild. This was partly due to its sinister nickname, the “Teufelsmühle,” and the fear of further misfortunes. Today, only the name and the scattered boulders remain as a testament to the legend of the Teufelsmühle. The mill’s story is a blend of natural wonder and folklore. It reminds us of a time when the unexplained was attributed to the supernatural. The Teufelsmühle, a silent storyteller in the Tännichtgrund, whispers tales of the devil’s mill.
