Tetelpan. A name that whispers of ancient stones and hidden histories. Here, in the heart of Álvaro Obregón, lies a secret world, a mountaintop community seemingly untouched by time. Tetelpan, meaning “in the tepetate” in Nahuatl, takes its name from the compacted geological layer beneath it. This yellowish tepetate stone, a source of economic survival for centuries, is still visible in the older buildings and influences the town’s color palette. The main road that winds through this charming neighborhood is none other than the Desierto de los Leones road, a clue to its location nestled amongst the surrounding mountains. Picture Tetelpan as a surprisingly elegant village, one of the ten original settlements of Álvaro Obregón. Its cobblestone streets invite you to wander and discover its hidden gems. At the heart of Tetelpan lies the Santa María de Natividad Church. But the church is only a small part of the town’s story. A tale that stretches back to 700 CE, possibly even further, as archeological evidence suggests inhabitation for nearly 3,000 years. The Techialoyan Codex of Santa María Tetelpan, a document created between 1700 and 1743, unveils a fascinating narrative. This codex, once almost unknown, was rediscovered at Brown University thanks to the efforts of the community and the INAH. The codex reveals a town much larger than the colonia we see today, a glimpse into a vibrant past. The church itself underwent a transformation in 1930, remodeled by the renowned architect Juan O’Gorman. His modernist touch still echoes through the town, a blend of the old and the new. Tetelpan offers exquisite views from its mountain perch, a quiet escape from the bustling city. It is a place where time slows down, inviting you to explore its modest town center, stroll its streets, and uncover the whispers of its past. Tetelpan. A hidden gem waiting to be explored.
