Opened in October 2024, the Terrace Overlook, part of the larger Waterfront Park project, is a symbol of Seattle’s innovative spirit. This elevated park, where the Alaskan Way Viaduct once stood, connects Pike Place Market, downtown, and the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion. The Terrace Overlook stands as a testament to Seattle’s commitment to accessibility. It allows people to traverse the 100-foot elevation change between Pike Place Market and the waterfront without crossing streets. It’s a space designed for everyone, with elevators, sloped pathways, and terraced landscapes. The Terrace Overlook offers more than just stunning 360-degree views. It features a children’s play area with a slide and climbing wall. Local businesses will soon occupy a dedicated concession space. The Bluff Walk, located at the top, showcases a variety of native plants, mimicking the natural landscapes surrounding Seattle. From grasses and shrubs to ferns and understory plants, the Bluff Walk provides a glimpse into the region’s diverse flora. The Terrace Overlook’s unique design is a marvel of engineering. It involved constructing reinforced concrete columns, installing precast girders, and adding miles of post-tension steel strands. The result is a seamless structure that blends beautifully with the waterfront. Two permanent art installations will further enhance the Terrace Overlook by early 2025. One, by the MTK Matriarchs, honors the Native history of the waterfront. The other, by Ann Hamilton, is a dynamic visual experience featuring marionette-like figures. The Terrace Overlook is more than a place to pause and admire the view. It’s an experience that connects you to Seattle’s past, present, and future.
