Did you know Tereos started as a small distillery? Imagine 1932. Farmers in Origny-Sainte-Benoite a town in northern France banded together. They formed a cooperative. Their goal was simple to process sugar beets. Their distillery processed a mere 400 tonnes of beets daily. This humble beginning was the seed that would one day grow into the massive Tereos we know today. This was Tereos’s first step toward global prominence.

This is the legacy of Paul Cavenne. He led those early farmers. His vision shaped a company that would transform French agriculture. His distillery wasn’t just a business. It was a cooperative a community effort. It demonstrated the power of collaboration. This spirit of cooperation remains at the core of Tereos.

Twenty years later a pivotal change occurred. Jean Duval the managing director transformed the distillery. He saw the potential for growth. He converted the distillery into a sugar factory. This factory could process an impressive 900 tonnes of sugar beets daily. It was a massive upgrade for its time. This shows the importance of adaptability and innovation for Tereos.

Fast forward to the 1990s. The Origny cooperative merged with Vic-sur-Aisne’s cooperative. This created the SDA Sucreries et Distilleries de l’Aisne. They combined their strengths. They formed a more powerful entity. It was a strategic move that significantly increased Tereos’s production capacity. They acquired the Berneuil sugar factory soon after. This expanded their reach even further.

The real turning point came in 2002. Tereos acquired Bèghin-Say. Bèghin-Say was the leading French sugar producer at the time. This acquisition catapulted Tereos to the top of the French sugar market. They now boasted 9500 cooperative growers. Tereos as a name and as a major player was born.

Subsequent mergers and acquisitions further solidified Tereos’s position. The merger with SDHF in 2006 strengthened its French market dominance. The acquisition of starch factories from Tate & Lyle in 2008 diversified its portfolio. The partnership with APM Déshy in 2016 expanded into alfalfa processing. In 2018 12000 growers unified under a single cooperative Tereos SCA.

Today Tereos is a global giant with operations in numerous countries. It produces not only sugar but also starch alcohol bioethanol and more. It’s a testament to the vision and resilience of those early farmers in Origny-Sainte-Benoite. Their small distillery grew into a world-renowned cooperative. Tereos’s success shows the power of collaboration adaptability and a commitment to innovation. This is a story of growth a testament to the human spirit. A story etched in the annals of French agricultural history.
