Teporingo. A name that whispers of volcanoes and whispers of a creature on the brink. Here, at the foot of the Teporingo Sculpture, we’re going to explore the story of its namesake: the volcano rabbit, also known as zacatuche or, endearingly, teporingo. This sculpture embodies the spirit of this remarkable little animal, a creature so small it could fit in your hands. The volcano rabbit is the second smallest rabbit in the world, weighing less than a bag of sugar. It’s a creature of the high slopes, specifically four volcanoes southeast of Mexico City, including the famed Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Imagine these little rabbits, with their short, dense fur, navigating the zacatón grasses that carpet their volcanic home. They build burrows, like miniature fortresses, up to five meters long and 40 centimeters deep. And their calls? Not the thumping of most rabbits, but high-pitched squeaks, like tiny whistles warning of danger. The volcano rabbit lives in small, close-knit families. They are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. Their diet consists primarily of the zacatón grass, supplemented by other plants and even tree bark during the dry season. Sadly, the teporingo is endangered. Urbanization, agricultural expansion, and the relentless march of climate change have shrunk their habitat. Imagine the highways cutting through their territory, like scars across the landscape. The very ground beneath their feet is shrinking. Fewer than 7,000 teporingos are believed to remain in the wild. Hunting them is illegal in Mexico. Efforts are underway to protect their habitat and even reintroduce them to areas where they’ve disappeared. This sculpture, then, is more than just art. It’s a symbol of a fragile existence, a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the urgent need to protect creatures like the teporingo before they vanish like whispers on the volcanic wind.
