Intrigued by a Jewish presence in Brazil dating back nearly 400 years? Then welcome to Templo Beth-El. This temple stands as a beacon of Jewish heritage in Rio de Janeiro. Its history is interwoven with Brazil’s own. Jewish migration here began in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Early settlers were often Conversos. These were Jews forcibly converted to Catholicism. The Portuguese Inquisition pursued them even to Brazil. Many sought refuge in a Dutch colony in northern Brazil.

In 1636, the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue was founded in Recife. This was the first synagogue in the Americas. The Inquisition made life difficult and dangerous. When it ended in 1821, Jews returned to Brazil. New synagogues emerged in the 1820s in Belém.

Later, in the 19th century, a new wave of Jewish migration began. European Jews sought agricultural opportunities. They also looked to escape antisemitism, especially in Russia. These pioneers faced many difficulties. They were inexperienced and poorly resourced. Despite the challenges, they broke cultural barriers. They also paved the way for wider Jewish immigration.

Brazil restricted Jewish immigration during the 20th century. This denied refuge to Holocaust refugees. Today, Brazil is considered among the least antisemitic countries. Jewish integration extends into every aspect of national life.

A tour of Brazil often includes Rio de Janeiro. This city is home to a vibrant Jewish community. The Museu Judaico do Rio de Janeiro offers insight into the city’s Jewish past. Here at Templo Beth-El, you can witness a restored grand synagogue. It was once a center of Jewish worship.

As you explore Rio, consider visiting Itzhak Rabin Park. It offers views of Botafogo beach and Sugar Loaf Mountain. There are about 20 synagogues in the city and its suburbs. The Associaçāo Religiosa Israelita is a Reform congregation. Orthodox and Conservative synagogues also welcome guests.

Visiting Rio offers a chance to connect with Brazilian Jews. It gives you the possibility to experience their culture and traditions. Templo Beth-El stands as a symbol of this rich heritage. It shows the enduring spirit of the Jewish community in Brazil.
