Rising like a golden pyramid from the prairie grass, the Temple of ECK stands as an international spiritual center. It welcomes visitors to explore its unique beliefs and practices. Founded by Paul Twitchell in 1965, Eckankar is a new religious movement. Its spiritual home is right here in Chanhassen Minnesota. Eckankar is not affiliated with any other religious group.
Now, let’s delve into the story of how the Temple of ECK came to be. In 1980, Paul Twitchell had a vision. He saw the future site of the Temple of Eckankar in Minnesota. Four years later, Twitchell and other Eckankar leaders traveled to Minnesota. They sought land to build the Temple. Twitchell found himself at a horse ranch called Higher Path in Chanhassen. He and his associates decided this was to be the new home of Eckankar. Eckankar purchased nearly 175 acres of land on Powers Boulevard. As a result, Eckankar became one of the largest landholders in the City of Chanhassen.
Built between 1989 and 1990, the Temple of ECK is an expansive facility. It includes worship spaces, classrooms, and meeting areas. The Temple’s design is highly intentional and symbolic. The stepped pyramidal roof is reminiscent of ancient Sumerian architecture. It symbolizes mankind’s spiritual journey to God Consciousness. The golden EK symbol sits above the main entrance.
Eckankar teaches simple spiritual exercises. Singing HU is one of these exercises. HU is called a love song to God. This practice helps people experience the light and sound of God. It helps them recognize the Holy Spirit’s presence. Eckankar believes that Soul can travel outside the physical body. This allows for conscious exploration of other planes of reality. Dreams are important teaching tools in Eckankar. Dream travel can serve as a gateway to Soul Travel.
The goal of Eckankar is spiritual liberation in one’s lifetime. This involves Self-realization and God-realization. Eckankar aims to guide Soul back to its divine source. Eckankar believes that contact with a divine spirit can be made. This is done through spiritual exercises and guidance from the Living ECK Master. The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad is the holy scripture of Eckankar. It contains spiritual meaning and purpose.
Eckankar is registered as a nonprofit religious organization. It reports members in over 120 countries. Eckankar’s teachings have been translated into over 25 languages. The Temple of ECK campus includes 2 miles of contemplation trails. These trails are open to the public.
