Why is this elegant structure, the Temple of Bellona, not made of stone? You might be surprised to learn that it’s actually crafted from wood. Sir William Chambers designed the Temple of Bellona in 1760. It was originally located near Princess Augusta’s menagerie. However, it found a new home south of Victoria Gate in 1802. The temple’s wooden construction is a fascinating quirk. In 1985, a worker restoring the temple was astonished to find it made of wood. He remarked on the surprisingly good condition of the softwood after 225 years. Despite its delicate material, the Temple of Bellona has survived centuries, even a fire that damaged its roof in 1987. Today, the Temple of Bellona stands as a beautiful reminder of Kew Gardens’ rich history. Its journey through time, including its relocation and resilience against the elements, is a testament to its enduring charm.
