Imagine stepping back in time to the early 20th century. That’s where our story begins, right here at the Temperate House.
The Temperate House stands as a testament to Auckland’s vision. It is a beautiful blend of nature and architecture. This glasshouse is one half of the Domain Wintergardens.
But how did this all come to be?
Following World War I, Auckland sought to create a space. This space would be a retreat for its citizens. Funds from the Industrial, Agricultural, and Mining Exhibition of 1913-1914 made it possible. Generous local benefactors also contributed. Sir George Elliot played a vital role as chairman of the exhibition. He was also chairman of the Bank of New Zealand.
The Auckland Domain had been a public park since 1844. But it was not always seen as desirable. The Wintergardens became part of the park’s gentrification. They provided an attraction for people during the winter months.
Gummer and Ford designed the gardens, showing influence from English designers. The Arts and Crafts movement inspired them.
Initially, only the Temperate House was built. It opened its doors to the public on 12 October 1921. Imagine the excitement. People entered a world of exotic plants. The courtyard, Tropical House, and Fernery came later in the 1920s. The initial cost to build was £4000. Fletcher Building constructed the second stage for £19500.
The Temperate House is home to many plants. These plants change with the seasons. Sunlight filters through the glass. It creates a magical atmosphere.
Look closer. The architecture reflects a bygone era. The barrel-vaulted steel and glass structure stands proudly. It’s a prime example of early 20th-century design.
Many additions have enhanced the Wintergardens over the years. Neoclassical statues arrived in 1945. The sunken pond was installed in 1954. A significant renovation project took place in 1993 and 1994.
Today, the Temperate House remains a Category I Historic Place. It’s a reminder of Auckland’s past. It also showcases the city’s commitment to preserving beauty.
