TJC: Can you imagine a college named after Singapore’s ancient name? Temasek Junior College stands as a beacon of education. It embodies the spirit of Singapore’s forefathers. Let’s delve into the story of this institution.

Temasek Junior College, or TJC, was established in 1976. It opened its doors to its first students in 1977. The name “Temasek” means “sea town”. It reflects Singapore’s history as a maritime hub. The college adopted this name to honor the resilience and courage of Singapore’s pioneers.

In 1982, Temasek Junior College began offering the Humanities Scholarship Programme. This program was coordinated by the Ministry of Education. In 2005, TJC launched the Temasek Academy. This was a four-year Integrated Programme. By 2013, the Integrated Programme expanded into a six-year course. It admitted students after their Primary School Leaving Examination.

The college crest of Temasek Junior College is quite symbolic. It features the letters TJC in bold form. The letter T resembles the Lecture Theatres. The green background represents Singapore’s commitment to a clean environment. The divisions in the cross of the T stand for national ideals. These ideals are justice, equality, happiness, prosperity, and progress. The segments in the trunk symbolize the four major races working together.

Temasek Junior College offers a six-year Integrated Programme. It also provides a two-year pre-university program. Both lead to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level examination. In 2021, 98% of TJC graduates qualified for university. They passed at least three H2 subjects and General Paper.

Temasek Junior College is a Centre of Excellence for Research. It was affirmed by the Ministry of Education in 2008. The college also offers the Music Elective Programme. This program allows students to explore composing and performing music. Since 1990, TJC has offered the Chinese Language Elective Programme.

Patrick Tay Teck Guan is another Member of Parliament who studied here. Ivan Heng is a famous Singaporean stage actor and director. Michelle Saram is an entrepreneur and actress. Nelson Kwei is a prominent music conductor.

Temasek Junior College’s campus in Bedok South is being rebuilt. Construction began in 2024. The college temporarily moved to the former site of Tampines Junior College. The new campus is expected to be ready in 2028.
