“Ever wondered where Teluknaga got its name?” I ask. Teluknaga means “Naga Bay”. We are now in Teluknaga a district northeast of Tangerang Regency. It is located in Banten Province on Java in Indonesia.

Teluknaga’s story is one of transformation. Once it was a small coastal area. Fishing was the main activity. Over time traders arrived from different regions. Teluknaga began to grow.

In the 1960s the government started building roads and bridges. This led to significant changes. By the 2000s Teluknaga became an important economic and cultural center. It is in Tangerang Regency.

At the beginning of the 20th century Teluknaga had a unique charm. It mixed coastal and urban elements. Traditional fishing boats lined the shore. This showed the community’s connection to the sea. Modern buildings stood in the district center. These included shopping centers offices and schools. They showed rapid infrastructure development.

Wide roads with shady trees gave a green and beautiful impression. Traditional Betawi and Sundanese houses could still be found. They reminded people of the past.

Teluknaga has changed a lot since it was founded. It began as a simple fishing settlement. There was minimal infrastructure. In the 1970s the government began major infrastructure projects. These included roads and public facilities. This development attracted many newcomers. New businesses opened. The local economy began to grow. In the following decades Teluknaga experienced rapid urbanization. Housing schools and shopping centers appeared. Today the district is known as a dynamic center. It is a center for economic and cultural activity.

The village’s main street is Jalan KH Mushonif. KH Mushonif was very influential. He impacted the village’s existence and fame. He was a follower of Pejuang.

Teluknaga was once a bay. It was called Naga. The entire Teluknaga district was once the sea. It was the estuary of the Tangerang River or Cisadane River. Old maps show this.

In the colonial era Teloknaga was private land. It was called Tandjoeng Boeroeng. Tan Eng Goan owned it. He was the 1st Majoor der Chinezen of Batavia.

Sedimentation played a big role. The eruption of Mount Salak in 1669 caused significant sediment buildup. Volcanic dust covered the land. This affected the river flow and the coastline.

The mouth of the Tangerang River was once near Teluknaga. Chinese people likely lived near the river mouth. Their settlement was called Kampong Moeara. Malays lived east of the bay. They lived around Kampong Melayu.

Over time sedimentation created new islands. These islands merged. They formed a large landmass. Kampong Moeara and Kampong Melayu became protected. They were sheltered by the new land.

Kampong Moeara became Kampong Teloknaga. The river mouth shifted east. The new river mouth became known as Kampong Moeara. In the VOC era this Kampong Moeara was called de Qual. New kampongs appeared between Kampong Melayu and Kampong Moeara. These included Kampong Tegal Angoes Kampong Ketapang and Kampong Lemo.

In 2023 Teluknaga had an estimated 167980 people. The population density was about 8300 per square mile. Teluknaga continues to evolve. It balances progress with preserving its unique coastal identity.
