Have you ever dreamt of exploring the ocean depths without getting wet? Right here before us lie the remnants of the Téléscaphe de Callelongue a unique underwater marvel.

The Téléscaphe de Callelongue wasn’t just any attraction. It was the world’s first underwater funicular a testament to human ingenuity. Imagine a time before widespread scuba diving when exploring the sea floor was a privilege only for the adventurous few. This innovative invention changed all that. Built in the 1960s in Marseille’s picturesque Callelongue cove the Téléscaphe offered a safe and accessible way for everyone to experience the underwater world.

Two visionaries a former Olympic skier James Couttet and an engineer Denis Creissels partnered to bring this dream to life. Their creation consisted of small yellow cabins equipped with large windows. These three-ton wonders could carry up to six passengers down to a depth of ten meters. Imagine the excitement as the cabins glided along underwater rails offering a unique perspective of the marine life. The ride covered 400 meters ending at the Île Maire a small island facing Callelongue cove.

The Téléscaphe was more than just a ride. Its opening day on July 1 1967 was a momentous occasion. It became the star of the first-ever nighttime mondovision broadcast a global event that showcased Marseille and the Téléscaphe’s uniqueness to a worldwide audience. In its two years of operation the Téléscaphe transported nearly 30000 visitors young and old including a daring couple who chose it as the location for their wedding photos. Each passenger received a special “diving baptism” certificate a quirky souvenir of their subaquatic adventure. For the modest price of 10 to 12 francs passengers could explore the underwater world in their everyday clothes. Nighttime trips were even available with special lighting illuminating the underwater landscape.

However the journey of the Téléscaphe wasn’t without its challenges. The initial lack of fish near the route became a problem. The ingenious solution was to sink a boat to attract marine life giving passengers more to see during their underwater trip. Despite its popularity high operational costs and a major storm eventually led to the Téléscaphe’s closure in 1969. Though the original cabins are gone the remnants of its mechanism still stand near the entrance of Callelongue a lasting reminder of this groundbreaking underwater adventure. Today you can still see the wheel mechanism that propelled those yellow cabins along their fascinating underwater route. The Téléscaphe de Callelongue may be gone but its legacy as the world’s first underwater funicular continues to fascinate.
