Imagine girls in long skirts and serious faces. They walked through these halls more than a century ago. This is Teleki Blanka Gimnázium. It is one of Budapest’s oldest schools.
After 1867 Hungary made education compulsory. József Eötvös asked Janka Zirzen to organize a school in 1868. So, the Teleki Blanka Gimnázium opened in 1873. It trained teachers with an apprentice school.
In 1875, the school moved to Sugár út. Janka Zirzen earned the Merit Cross in 1877. She worked hard for women’s education. By 1898, the school adopted the name of Queen Elizabeth of Hungary.
A new building finished construction in 1902. Sándor Baumgartner and Zsigmond Herczeg designed it. The building has an Art Nouveau style.
In 1931, the school became a lyceum. It had eight classes. Olga Radák made the school famous from 1928 to 1943. It became known for its excellent education. The school changed its name to Teleki Blanka Gimnázium in 1950.
Painter Attila Csáji worked here in the 1990s. He is a holographist.
The Teleki Blanka Gimnázium stands on Ajtósi Dürer sor. It is near Városliget. The school remains a symbol of education. It has a rich history. Its motto is “The school of the future.”
Many talented people attended this school. Géza Morcsányi became a translator. Klára Leövey served as a director from 1946 to 1948. István Pukli directed the school from 2015 to 2016. Gál Ferenc was the director from 2017 to 2021.
