Have you ever heard of a village born from flood-prone rice paddies? Welcome to Tegal Harum a village in Denpasar Bali. Tegal Harum wasn’t always the thriving community it is today. It began as a low-lying area often inundated with water unsuitable for farming. But then Perum-Perumnas a national housing company stepped in.
They built the Monang Maning housing complex. Ten blocks sprang up transforming the landscape. Each block developed its own unique identity. Think of it like a family of neighborhoods each with its own personality and charm. Block VI became Tegal Sari Block VII Sapta Bumi and so on.
Initially these blocks fell under the administration of Pemecutan. This wasn’t ideal as the fast-growing community needed its own voice. So the government established two preparatory villages. Tegal Harum was one of them. Local leaders were appointed but the area remained under Pemecutan. The paperwork was all handled through the Pemecutan office.
Further development led to the official recognition of Tegal Harum as a village. It wasn’t just the Monang Maning blocks. Tegal Harum expanded its boundaries. It included Dusun Banjar Buana Kubu and Sari Buana previously part of Padangsambian. Asta Buana formerly belonging to Pemecutan Kelod was incorporated as well. Tegal Harum’s area now encompasses eight Dusun Banjar. This is a testament to its growth and the community’s resilience. The official size is approximately 62 hectares.
Today Tegal Harum boasts a population of over 16000 people. Its history is a testament to its transformation from swampy rice fields to a vibrant modern village. The spirit of community and cooperation that has led Tegal Harum to its present-day success shows the strength of its people.
