Could the Teddington Methodist Church tell a story? It certainly could. This church has stood on Stanley Road in Teddington since 1952. But its story stretches back much further.

The Teddington Methodist Church story began in 1859. The first church building was not on this site. It was located in Clarence Road. That original building was a modest one. It later became known as Craig Hall. Today the building has been redeveloped into housing.

As Methodism grew in Teddington a member of the Clarence Road church offered to pay for a quarter of a new building. The offer was on the condition that the work was carried out within two years. So in 1878 the foundation stone was laid. The new church opened on July 1 1879.

This new Teddington Methodist Church stood at the junction of Hampton and Stanley Roads. It had wrought iron gates. A paved path led to a steep flight of steps. These led to the chapel entrance. Inside there was no center aisle. Pews were arranged on each side and in a center block. The ceiling was very high and vaulted. At the front were three large arched windows. The Beatitudes were beautifully scripted around each one.

In 1922 major renovations took place. Side screens and the rostrum were removed. The organ was moved and the choir pews on the right went. A high oak pulpit was placed on the right. This was by the Vestry door. An oak panel was placed behind the Communion table.

Disaster struck in August 1944. A flying bomb demolished the Teddington Methodist Church. But the hospital was saved. The congregation found a temporary home. They worshipped in the Memorial Hall in Church House on Hampton Road.

By 1952 the church was rebuilt on its present site. The foundation stone was laid on October 6 1951. The church reopened on October 25 1952. Since then the Teddington Methodist Church has been a vital part of the community.

Today the Teddington Methodist Church continues to thrive. It serves the local community. The church hosts activities for over 1000 adults and children each week. It is now known as Teddington Methodist Church and Community Centre. The current minister is Rev David Innes. He leads services on Sunday mornings and evenings. The church also produces a newsletter called Focus three times a year.

So when you pass by, remember the Teddington Methodist Church. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to community spirit. It is a place of worship and a center for local activities. It welcomes all.
