In 1868, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, a man known for his fairytale castles, laid the foundation for something quite different: the Technical University of Munich. Right here, at the university’s main campus, we stand on the grounds of what began as the Polytechnische Schule München. Imagine the bustle of those early days, with 350 students and a handful of professors navigating six different departments. The Technical University of Munich, or TUM as it’s often called, has come a long way since then. It quickly outgrew its initial designation as a polytechnic school. In 1877, it became the Technische Hochschule München, gaining the right to award doctorates in 1901. This paved the way for TUM to become a leading force in research and innovation. The Technical University of Munich is particularly renowned for its focus on engineering, technology, medicine, and the applied and natural sciences. The university has expanded beyond these walls. Now boasting campuses in Garching, Freising, Heilbronn, Straubing, and even Singapore. The Garching campus, a hub of scientific activity, stands as the largest. Interestingly, the initial location here at Arcisstraße remains the heart of the university. It houses departments like Architecture, Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Schools of Management, Governance, and Education. The Technical University of Munich’s history is not without its shadows. During the Nazi era, the university, like many institutions in Germany, was forced to conform to the regime’s ideology. Some professors resisted, even protecting Jewish students, while others unfortunately embraced the regime’s agenda. The university was heavily involved in wartime research. The post-war period saw the rebuilding of the campus, which was largely destroyed. The addition of a medical school in 1967 marked a significant expansion of the university’s reach. Today, the TUM School of Medicine is situated at the Rechts der Isar Hospital. As the Technical University of Munich celebrates over 150 years of history, its legacy of innovation and research continues to thrive. This institution has shaped countless minds, fostered groundbreaking discoveries, and contributed significantly to the advancement of science and technology.
