Pascual Carcavallo owned the Teatro Presidente Alvear. He was a major theatrical businessman. He greatly boosted Argentine theater. The inaugural performance was Enrique Garcia Velloso’s “Eclipse de sol”. It was staged by the Argentine Comedy Company.
For a brief time, the Teatro Presidente Alvear was renamed “Enrique Santos Discépolo”. This happened in 1951 when the City of Buenos Aires took over. But this decision was reversed in 1955. The Carcavallo heirs kept control until 1980. Then the Secretariat of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires took over.
Inside the Teatro Presidente Alvear, 861 seats await. The audience is spread across different sections. There is a main seating area for 313 people. A pullman area holds 250 seats. The tertulia accommodates 168. Three balcony sections contain 132 seats in total. The foyer has a simple rationalist style. Classic chandeliers add a touch of elegance.
