Imagine this: it’s January 15 1944. The Original Ballet Russe graces the stage. The Teatro de Verano Ramól Collazo is officially open. For 80 years this theater has hosted national and international stars.
In 1986 the theater was renamed in honor of Ramól Collazo. He was a famous pianist and composer of Uruguayan Carnival music. Five years earlier Collazo had passed away. He loved this venue.
Collazo was a true artist. He composed and wrote music. He sang and acted. He directed and played music. The Teatro de Verano became his favorite stage in the 1950s and 1960s. His January shows were legendary. They happened right before Carnival.
The Teatro de Verano Ramól Collazo is open to all types of art. National and international shows happen here. Festivals and Carnival shows fill the calendar. Community events are common. The goal is to give the public a great venue. Artists and staff all contribute.
The theater is in Parque Rodó by the Rambla Wilson. It is surrounded by the park’s quarries. The stage roof features ceramic work. Eladio Dieste developed this technique.
