Overlooking the sparkling Hauraki Gulf, Te Whau vineyard sits perched on a picturesque headland. Te Whau vineyard isn’t just about vines and grapes. It’s a place where history, breathtaking views, and exceptional wine intertwine. Established in 1993 on an old sheep farm, Te Whau vineyard quickly became a beloved stop on Auckland’s wine trail. The distinctive winery and cafe building offer stunning panoramic views, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe. From renowned actor Sean Connery to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, Te Whau has hosted a plethora of VIPs. The vineyard’s founders, Tony and Moira Forsyth, along with Tony’s sister Caroline, had a clear vision: to create a remarkable restaurant and produce exquisite wines. They certainly achieved their goals. Te Whau became known for its Bordeaux-style blends, particularly its Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. These wines, crafted with meticulous care, have garnered acclaim, often compared to the prestigious wines of Bordeaux’s left bank. One standout is “The Point,” a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Each vintage tells a unique story, reflecting the specific conditions of the year. From the robust 2010 to the surprisingly pleasant 2009, each bottle offers a glimpse into the vineyard’s terroir and winemaking expertise. While the last vintage was produced in 2015 and the property was sold in 2017, Te Whau’s legacy lives on. The vineyard continues to be leased by another Waiheke winemaker, ensuring the continuation of wine production on this beautiful headland. Te Whau vineyard is more than just a winery.
