Have you ever wondered about the stories hidden within the walls of a mosque? Today, we stand before a building that embodies not only faith but also a rich cultural heritage. This is the Tawfiq Islamic Center, a landmark in Minneapolis. It is the first and largest Oromo Muslim Mosque and Community Center in North America. The Oromo people are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. They are believed to be the second largest group in Africa. Some members of the Oromo Muslims started to arrive in Minnesota in the early 1990s. They felt a strong desire to preserve their religious and cultural identity. After years of hard work, they were able to buy the Masjid Tawfiq in 2004. Since 2006, it is known as Tawfiq Islamic Center. In 2007, it became a Faith-Based organization with 501 c (3) IRS Compliant status. The Tawfiq Islamic Center is a testament to the resilience and determination of a community striving to maintain its traditions while embracing a new home. It serves over a thousand families with diverse programs. This place is a beacon of hope, offering a sense of belonging and community to those who call it their own.
