Centuries ago, the area around the Tatara River hummed with activity. Iron sand, possibly brought from other regions, was smelted here using charcoal from the surrounding hardwood forests. Two methods were primarily used: kera-oshi, for making steel directly, and zuku-oshi, for making pig iron.
