Koga’s heart beats within the ancient walls of Koga Shrine. Do you hear it? It’s a rhythm echoing with centuries of stories, whispered prayers, and the rustle of sacred leaves. Koga Shrine stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this community. It’s a place woven from the threads of several shrines, each with its own tale to tell. Originally, the village was divided. In the east stood the Fusha Koga Shrine, while the west housed the Fusha Izumi Shrine. Each held a significant place in the hearts of the villagers, creating a sense of division. Other smaller shrines dotted the landscape, dedicated to various deities. Then, in 1952, a transformation occurred. The shrines merged, uniting the village under the single banner of Koga Shrine. This fusion brought together the worship of six deities: Ohirume-no-mikoto, Susanoo-no-mikoto, Haniyasu-no-kami, Takaokami-no-kami, Kuraokami-no-kami, and Oyamatsumi-no-kami. Koga Shrine isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living chronicle of Koga’s history. One fascinating relic here is the heart-shaped chozubachi, a water basin used for ritual cleansing. Originally located at the old Izumi Shrine, it was moved to Koga Shrine in 2015. Its unique shape and the small, almost hidden holes surrounding it are believed to protect children. These holes are said to confuse evil spirits, preventing them from harming the innocent. Koga Shrine celebrates several festivals throughout the year, keeping the ancient traditions alive. The most significant are the Joint Anniversary Festival in February, the Hitogata Festival in July, and the Autumn Festival, spanning from September 28th to 29th. These festivals bring the community together, reinforcing the bonds forged over generations. As you stand before Koga Shrine, take a moment to absorb the quiet strength of this place. Let the stories of unity, resilience, and faith resonate within you. They are the whispers of Koga’s heart, waiting to be heard.
