Could you imagine a place where rare birds nest and otters frolic? That place is Tåstrup Sø. It is a hidden gem southwest of Harlev. Tåstrup Sø is more than just a lake. It is part of a protected area.
Tåstrup Sø lies mostly in Aarhus Kommune. A small part extends into Skanderborg Kommune. The lake sits in a valley connected to the Aarhus River valley. Tåstrup Bæk drains Tåstrup Sø into the Aarhus River. This happens just west of Årslev Engsø near Gammel Harlev.
Tåstrup Sø is part of the Harlev conservation area. It also belongs to the Natura 2000 area. This area is number 232 and includes Lillering Skov, Stjær Skov, and Tåstrup Mose. The whole area covers 135 hectares. Most of the Harlev conservation area is in Aarhus Kommune. A smaller southern section is in Skanderborg Kommune.
While Tåstrup Sø is privately owned there is public access. There are marked trails for hiking. A birdwatching tower was built in 2013. The tower stands just west of the lake in Skanderborg Kommune. You can get there via Stenskovvej.
Tåstrup Sø covers 10 hectares. The surrounding wetlands, rich fens, and springs expand the area. It then totals 26 hectares. North of Tåstrup Sø is Tåstrup Mose. This bog is full of willow and red alder trees. Tåstrup Sø itself is shallow and nutrient-rich. Water lilies shade the water reducing algae growth.
Around 1950 otters disappeared from the area. They are a threatened species in Denmark. But in 2001 breeding otters were seen again at Tåstrup Sø. Efforts are underway to improve their habitat in the protected area.
Tåstrup Sø and Tåstrup Mose are home to many water and marsh birds. Some of these birds are rare in Denmark. The Penduline Tit has nested here. It was first recorded in the conservation area in 1970.
Tåstrup is a village with well-preserved farms. Tåstrup Sø and Tåstrup Mose form a natural area. Together with Stjær Stenskov and Lillering Skov they are called Tåstruplandet. The conservation case started in 2012. It was finally approved in late 2019. Tåstruplandet has varied nature. There are meadows old forests and marsh areas.
The land in Tåstruplandet is privately owned. Farming and forestry are either stopped or reduced. After the conservation started the area opened to the public. Paths and hiking routes were established. People should stay on marked paths. This protects landowners and wildlife. Nearby is the beautiful Tarskov Mølle. It is another protected property.
