Hidden in plain sight stands Masjid Tasek Utara a humble mosque. It sits at the junction of Bristol Road and Carlisle Road. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. Masjid Tasek Utara is far from the grand Saracenic style mosques we often see. Instead it boasts a charming village style. This makes it unique among Singapore’s religious structures.

Built in 1907 it began as a small surau a simple prayer hall. It served the Tasek Utara community. Over time the mosque grew. The Singapore Improvement Trust’s public housing projects expanded the area. This brought more people to the community. Masjid Tasek Utara welcomed new worshippers from Cambridge and Pek Kio estates.

The mosque’s modest white building with its grey tiled roof is deceptively simple. Inside it holds all the necessary components for Muslim worship. Prayer rooms and ablution areas are present. The current structure is a result of gradual additions and renovations. Its original form was a basic prayer space under a low-pitched roof.

In 2016 Masjid Tasek Utara underwent a major refurbishment. This was the first time it had such extensive upgrading. The Mosque Building and Mendaki Fund generously contributed S$600,000. This covered part of the total S$977,000 cost. The Mosque Management Board rallied for the rest. Unlike two other mosques involved in the program Masjid Tasek Utara was the only one closed. This allowed for complete restoration and upgrades. The renovations included refurbishing prayer halls and repainting. Crucially they replaced the original wooden pillars with concrete ones to strengthen the building’s structure.

The mosque reopened in early 2017. Today it continues to serve a diverse community. It welcomes employees from the Land Transport Authority and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Residents of Farrer Park and Serangoon Road also frequent its Friday prayers. Masjid Tasek Utara quietly stands as a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of its people. A century of prayers echoes within its walls a quiet testament to faith and community.
