Modern classicism meets youthful energy here. Tårnby Gymnasium & HF stands as a testament to architectural vision and educational commitment. Founded in 1966 as Tårnby Gymnasium, the school has grown. It now offers both general upper secondary education and higher preparatory education.
Architects Halldor Gunnløgsson and Jørn Nielsen designed the original buildings. Their modern classicist style features light gray cement walls and dark gray winged tiles. Large, blossoming atrium courtyards interrupt the strict form. These courtyards bring an oriental-inspired touch to the gymnasium. In 1967, Gunnløgsson and Nielsen won the Træprisen award for their design of Tårnby Gymnasium.
Since its establishment, Tårnby Gymnasium & HF has expanded. SWECO Architects collaborated on these expansions. A music hall was completed in 2012. A multi-purpose hall was inaugurated December 11, 2013. The old girls’ gymnastics hall was transformed into a drama hall. It opened April 27, 2015. Simultaneously, the science labs were renovated. The two light courts in the entrance hall were incorporated into student areas.
Tårnby Gymnasium initially was a municipal gymnasium. In 1973, it transitioned to Copenhagen County. With the municipal reform of 2007, Tårnby Gymnasium & HF became an independent state institution. A board of 11 members governs it. The school’s leadership includes a rector, vice-rectors, and two heads of education. Currently, Mikkel Harder Sørensen serves as rector.
Tårnby Gymnasium & HF is more than just buildings. It is a place of learning and growth. Approximately 950 students and 90 employees make up the school community. The gymnasium has produced notable alumni. These include politician Peter Hummelgaard-Thomsen and comedian Christian Fuhlendorff. The school is located in Tårnby on Amager. It sits close to the border of Copenhagen Municipality. The buildings stand modern and up-to-date.
However, there was also a dramatic incident. Police were called to the gymnasium because several students had been bitten by a dog. The situation escalated. Police shot the aggressive dog, which was later euthanized by a veterinarian. Rector Mikkel Harder Sørensen expressed his shock. He also praised the students who helped during the incident.
