Isn’t it amazing how a place can be both a scenic spot and a tribute to someone’s life? This is Tarnai pihenő. It is a viewpoint with a story.

Tarnai pihenő sits on the edge of the Budai Mountains’ highest point. It offers a panoramic view from its rocky outcrop. You can see the Kis-Kopasz hills. They fade into the Zsámbéki Basin. To the left is Széchenyi Hill. To the right the Gerecse Mountains. On clear days, you might even spot the Százhalombatta refinery chimneys.

This spot is named after Tarnai László. He was a tour guide. Tragically he died in a bus accident in Austria in 1991. He was traveling with a group. This place honors his memory.

Look around at the landscape. The area has a Mediterranean feel. Black pines surround it. The ground is a mix of grass and exposed dolomite. This rock makes it hard for soil to form. So trees struggle to grow here.

The open dolomite grassland is full of wildflowers. Please stay on the path. This protects the fragile plant life. You might find rare plants like the István király szegfű. Tarka kosbor and henye boroszlán also grow here.

The black pines play a vital role here. They are like gardeners of the former dolomite hills. These trees love sunlight. They can handle dry conditions. They help to stabilize the soil. After logging, the soil needed to be strengthened. The pines help create humus. This helps native plants grow.

The black pines give the Fekete-hegyek its name. Many of these trees have fallen. This thinning is good for the area. Too many black pines block sunlight. This hurts the growth of smaller plants. These plants provide shelter for animals.

Notice the gullies. Rainwater has carved them into the dolomite surface. This creates a unique landscape. This is where the flat hilltop slopes downward.

You can reach Tarnai pihenő with a short walk. It is about 30 to 45 minutes from the Hideg-völgyi rest area. From here it takes around 20 minutes to reach Nagy-Kopasz. It is the highest point in the Budai Mountains.
