Imagine yourself transported back to 1645. That was when King John IV created the Tapada da Ajuda.

Welcome to the Tapada da Ajuda. It is more than just a park. It is a journey through time. This green space occupies a hundred hectares. It is a testament to Lisbon’s rich history.

Originally, the Tapada da Ajuda served as the Royal Hunting Ground. It provided private leisure for the royal family. The Tapada was conveniently located between Quinta da Ninfa and Casal do Rio Seco.

Around 1755, the royal residence moved to Ajuda. The name changed to Real Tapada da Ajuda. Agriculture became more important. Cultivation plots started appearing.

Today, the Tapada da Ajuda borders Monsanto Forest Park. It houses the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory. You can also find the Instituto Superior de Agronomia here. Plus, there is an Exhibition Pavilion. Rugby fields add to the mix.

Climb to the highest point. There is a geodesic landmark at 134 meters altitude. From here, a belvedere offers stunning views. Look out over the Tagus River.

The Tapada da Ajuda has a rich architectural history. A wall surrounds the area. There are four main gates. The south gate faces Rua Jau. It serves as the main entrance.

Other notable buildings include the Exhibition Pavilion. Also consider the Main Building of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia. Over 25 other buildings dot the landscape.

Roads divide the land into plots. Each plot is named after its primary crop. Vineyards lie to the west and east of the main entrance.

Discover the Jardim do Auditório. It is now abandoned. Yet, it features well-formed olive trees. An open-air auditorium designed by Professor Francisco Caldeira Cabral.

To the west of the Main Building lies an area of buildings. These include a canteen and tennis courts. Here are also the Rebelo da Silva Chemical-Agricultural Laboratory.

The Tapada da Ajuda also includes the Herbarium and Library. Find auditoriums and greenhouses here. The Forest Engineering Pavilion is nearby. Also look for the Agro-Industries and Tropical Pavilion. There is even a Seed Testing Station.

In the northeast part of Tapada da Ajuda, you can find the Jardim da Parada. It features dense vegetation and stone tanks. This garden includes the Queen’s Garden. Three tiled benches depict historical-religious episodes. A statue honors agronomist João Coelho da Motta Prego.

North of the Botanical Reserve is the Miradouro de Salazar. It sits at 140 meters altitude. The rugby field lies north of this viewpoint.

Archaeologists discovered a Bronze Age settlement here. Now, the rugby field covers the site.

The Tapada da Ajuda is home to diverse flora. Originally, dense thickets covered the land. The creation of the Royal Tapada preserved these. Today, the D. António Xavier Pereira Coutinho Botanical Reserve protects them.

Explore the Tapada’s varied plant life. Eucalyptus trees grow in the north. Pine trees cover the Terra dos Pinheiros. Cork oaks thrive in the Cova do Sobreiro. Various ornamental species dot gardens and paths. Vineyards and fruit trees grow here, adapted to the climate.

The Tapada da Ajuda is more than a park. It is a living museum. It is a place where history and nature intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty.
