Gazing across the sprawling landscape of Rio de Janeiro, have you ever wondered about the stories whispered within its vibrant neighborhoods? Today, our journey takes us to Tanque, a neighborhood nestled in the West Zone, brimming with a history as unique as its name. Tanque, meaning “tank” in Portuguese, derives its name from a vital piece of its past. In 1875, a large water reservoir, or “tanque,” was built in this area to provide refreshment for the horses and mules that pulled the animal-powered trams. This crucial stop between Porta d’Água in Freguesia and Taquara became a hub of activity. The Largo do Tanque, as it was then known, quickly evolved. A bustling commerce sprang up around the watering hole, drawing residents and solidifying the area’s identity as the neighborhood of Tanque. The original tanque was removed in the 1940s as electric trams replaced their animal-drawn predecessors. A fountain was erected in its place, a symbolic nod to the neighborhood’s origins. Even this fountain eventually met its end, removed during BRT construction in 2013. Yet, the name Tanque endures, a testament to a time when horses and mules traversed these streets, their thirst quenched by the vital waters of the tanque. Today, Tanque thrives as a residential haven within the larger Jacarepaguá region. It remains connected to its roots, a quiet reminder of a simpler time, a story whispered in the heart of Rio’s vibrant West Zone.
