Dreams linger in the air around the Tännichtgrundmühle. Here, time slows down, and history whispers through the ancient timbers. This is not just a mill. It is a living testament to resilience, family, and the enduring power of craftsmanship.

The Tännichtgrundmühle was erected in 1843. It stands on the western edge of Dresden in Niederwartha. For over a century, its wooden gears have turned. The adjacent Tännichtgrundbach once powered a large water wheel. It measured nine meters in diameter. It was one of the largest in Saxony.

After World War II, the Appelt family arrived in 1954. They were resettled from the Sudetenland. Eduard Appelt, a carpenter, bought the Tännichtgrundmühle. The mill was in a dilapidated condition. The family made it their home and workshop.

Helga Appelt, Eduard’s daughter, remembers those early years. Only fragments of the great water wheel remained. Over time, the family restored much of the mill. They renewed the saw frame and built additions. A turbine harnessed the Tännichtgrundbach. It enabled the saw to operate.

In the 1960s, locals began bringing their timber to the mill. They brought entire fruit trees. Eduard cut the trunks into planks. Helga eventually met her partner at the mill.

Heinz Schönherr is the Tännichtgrundmühle master. He is 84 years old. He continues Eduard Appelt’s work. Schönherr says, “Wood is my life.” He took over after Eduard Appelt’s death. He demonstrates the old workshop. He explains the historical milling technology. He operates the ancient grindstone. A flood destroyed the turbine in 2014. Schönherr installed an electric motor.

Even today, people come for the senior master to cut wood. He works up to five hours almost every day. Heinz says it keeps him fit. He intends to continue as long as his health permits.

The Tännichtgrundmühle is more than just a historical site. It is a place where tradition lives on. It represents dedication and the love of a craft. It is a reminder of simpler times. Stop for a moment. Listen to the sounds of the mill. Imagine the lives that have passed through its wooden walls. The Tännichtgrundmühle is a treasure. It deserves to be cherished.
