Did you know Tanjong Pinang was once called Seri Tanjong Pinang? This vibrant suburb of George Town has a fascinating history. It wasn’t always the bustling place we see today. Imagine the 1980s. The then Chief Minister Lim Chong Eu first envisioned Tanjong Pinang. He dreamt of reclaiming land transforming the landscape.

The project began in the 1990s. Land reclamation for Phase 1 started. Then the 1997 Asian financial crisis hit. The project stalled. Construction stopped. Progress was delayed.

However the dream of Tanjong Pinang lived on. Eastern & Oriental Berhad acquired the site in 2003. They restarted development. Despite rising costs the 240-acre Phase 1 was finally finished in 2005. It was a significant accomplishment. Think of the effort involved. The sheer scale of the project.

Phase 2 began in 2016. This involved reclaiming even more land. 760 acres to be exact. Simultaneously Gurney Bay was being reclaimed too. It opened partially in 2024. Andaman Island’s reclamation began and the first phase was completed in 2019. This man-made islet is planned as a mixed-use development. It has a planned gross development value of RM17 billion.

By 2020 Tanjong Pinang had a population of 11970 people. Almost half were ethnic Chinese. Malays made up another fifth. A sizable expatriate community lived there. They accounted for over 18% of residents. Indians made up 6%.

Stonyhurst College a prestigious Jesuit school from Lancashire opened a sister school in Tanjong Pinang in 2022. It offers a British curriculum to students aged 3 to 18. Straits Quay a marina and shopping mall opened in 2010. It contains over 100 retail lots and a marina with 40 pontoon berths. The mall also houses the Performing Arts Centre of Penang and a convention centre. A Lotus’s hypermarket opened in 2011. Tanjong Pinang truly became a vibrant hub.

So next time you’re in Penang remember Tanjong Pinang’s journey. It’s a testament to vision perseverance and remarkable growth. A story of dreams realized against all odds. A place that transformed from a vision to a thriving community.
