Tanjong Pagar. A name whispered on the winds of Singapore’s history, a place where the past and present intertwine. Tanjong Pagar, once a humble fishing village known as Salinter, has blossomed into a vibrant district within Singapore’s bustling Central Business District. Tanjong Pagar’s name, meaning “cape of stakes” in Malay, harkens back to a time when fishermen used stakes to mark their fishing boundaries among the mangroves. The Malay Annals tell a more fantastical tale of how banana stem barricades protected the village from swordfish attacks. From these simple beginnings, Tanjong Pagar grew. In the 1600s, it became a haven for Chinese and Indian dockworkers. The rise of Keppel Harbour in the late 19th century cemented Tanjong Pagar’s position as a vital economic hub. The Tanjong Pagar Dock Company emerged, building wharves along the coast. Tanjong Pagar Road, opened in 1892, became a major artery, transporting goods between the docks and the city. The area transformed rapidly. Hills were leveled, roads were laid, and shophouses lined streets like Duxton, Tanjong Pagar, and Neil. Tanjong Pagar became a transportation hub with the Jinrikisha Station in 1903 and the iconic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station in 1932. Today, while the railway station’s trains have ceased, the building remains, repurposed as a museum and integrated with the modern Cantonment MRT station. Tanjong Pagar still boasts cultural gems like the Thian Hock Keng Temple, one of Singapore’s oldest, and the Baba House, a Peranakan museum. The district is now a foodie paradise, with Michelin-starred restaurants and bustling hawker centers like Amoy and Maxwell. From “cape of stakes” to a culinary and cultural destination, Tanjong Pagar whispers the story of Singapore’s transformation.
