Imagine the Royal Australian Air Force personnel. During the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation they found refuge in Tanjong Bungah. They called their residences Hillside. Their wives even ran an amateur radio station. Radio RAAF broadcast across Penang and parts of Kedah.
The 1980s brought a transformation. High-rises sprang up along the shoreline. Tanjong Bungah became attractive to expats. They chose to retire here. It offered a mix of urban convenience and coastal beauty. Today four international schools flourish here.
Tragedy struck in 2004. The Indian Ocean tsunami hit Tanjong Bungah hard. Fifty-two lives were lost. But from tragedy came resilience. In 2005 the Floating Mosque was built. It’s now a landmark. A symbol of faith and hope.
Tanjong Bungah now boasts a population of over 14000. A diverse community thrives here. Chinese make up the majority. Malays also have a significant presence. Expats contribute a vibrant cultural mix.
The main road Jalan Tanjong Bungah cuts through the heart of the suburb. Rapid Penang buses connect it to George Town. Batu Ferringhi and the airport are also easily accessible. Even a cycling lane has been added. A testament to Tanjong Bungah’s forward-thinking approach.
