Established in 1917 Chung Ling High School stands proudly before you. It began as a primary school. It later became the oldest surviving Chinese high school in Southeast Asia. Imagine the dedication of its founders Khoo Beng Cheang Khaw Seng Lee Tan Xin Cheng Lim Joo Teik and Chee Yeong It. They envisioned a school that would educate generations of Chinese Malaysians.
Chung Ling wasn’t just an educational institution. It was a hub for intellectual and political activity. Students participated in anti-Japanese protests. The school harbored both Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party sympathies during the Chinese Civil War. This made it a target during the Japanese occupation. Classes were forcefully disbanded. Many staff and alumni faced persecution.
The school reopened in 1946. It thrived under headmaster David Chen a reformer. He led Chung Ling to academic excellence in the 1950s and early 1960s. Its teachers were renowned poets and university professors. Many graduates went on to become influential figures. They became educators Olympic athletes ministers and politicians in both Singapore and Malaysia.
Tragedy struck in the 1950s. Headmaster David Chen was assassinated. The assassination highlighted the school’s role in the political turmoil of the time. The school became a public school in 1956. This led to the founding of a separate private school Chung Ling Private High School in 1962.
Chung Ling High School continues to excel. It is designated a Cluster School of Excellence. It remains one of Penang’s premier Chinese schools. The school’s motto I Cherish My Chung Ling reflects a deep sense of pride and tradition. This pride is shared by its many alumni who have made significant contributions to society.
