Lost in a maze of twisting streets? Welcome to Tangletown Minneapolis. This isn’t your typical grid-planned neighborhood. Its charm lies in its delightfully confusing layout. In fact the name Tangletown perfectly describes the winding roads that deviate from the usual South Minneapolis street grid. Before 1996 it was known as Fuller. That name didn’t quite capture the essence of this unique place.

Tangletown’s story begins in 1886. A vision of a wealthy residential area was laid out. Two hundred acres of farmland near Minnehaha Creek were purchased. However economic hardship struck. The ambitious plans stalled. Development slowed. Most homes were built between 1910 and 1930.

Despite the delayed start Tangletown flourished. It became a prestigious neighborhood. Many beautiful homes were built. Some are remarkably well-preserved examples of 1920s architecture. You can spot them easily on your stroll today.

If you love historic homes you’ll love Tangletown. It’s not just about grand old houses though. Tangletown offers modern conveniences too. There’s a Kowalski’s grocery store. You can grab coffee at Starbucks or Caribou Coffee. South Lyndale Liquors boasts a remarkable selection of spirits and craft beers. Washburn Library is a great local resource. Sunstreet Bread and St Louis Bagelry offer fresh baked goods. Wise Acre Eatery provides farm-to-table dining. Tangletown Gardens is a delightful garden center for plant lovers.

The area is incredibly walkable. It’s easy to explore the neighborhood on foot. Minnehaha Creek flows through the southern part of the neighborhood. It offers beautiful views and recreational opportunities like kayaking and fishing. The creek connects to an excellent bike path system perfect for leisurely rides or serious biking adventures. Plus the area is conveniently located near downtown Minneapolis.

Washburn High School and Justice Page Middle School are both located within Tangletown. The Washburn Park Water Tower sits atop the highest point offering a panoramic view of the neighborhood. This area has a strong sense of community. It offers history charm and convenient amenities all in one captivating package. So lose yourself in the delightful tangle of Tangletown Minneapolis. You won’t regret it.
