Originally a swamp, Taman Waduk Pluit in North Jakarta now stands as a testament to transformation. The name “Pluit” itself comes from the Dutch word “fluitschip,” meaning a long, slender-hulled sailing ship. A decommissioned vessel, the Het Whitte Paert, was left on the eastern shore of the Angke River estuary, giving the area its unique name. Taman Waduk Pluit’s journey began in the 1960s as a planned polder, part of a larger development encompassing housing, industry, and the reservoir itself. The project expanded to include surrounding areas like Jelambar and Pejagalan in 1971. By 1976, Pluit had blossomed into a modern settlement, complete with recreational spaces and industrial zones. The reservoir itself was finally completed in 1981, ironically marked by a major flood in the area. Over time, encroachment by housing led to significant siltation, shrinking the reservoir’s effective area from 80 hectares to just 60. Residents began building on state-owned land around the reservoir, starting with semi-permanent structures using the reservoir wall for support. Combined with upstream waste and household garbage, this drastically reduced Taman Waduk Pluit’s capacity. By 2012, the once 10-meter-deep reservoir was a mere two meters deep. Efforts to combat the decline included dredging in 2005, water hyacinth removal in 2009, and a new floodgate for better water and waste control in the same year. However, the encroaching settlements hindered these efforts. A plan to relocate 13,000 residents in 2010 faced resistance, delaying the much-needed normalization. In 2013, following another flood, the Jakarta government initiated the relocation process, which was initially met with protests. After a period of tension, the residents eventually agreed to a phased relocation, allowing for a significant restoration of Taman Waduk Pluit. The surrounding area was transformed into a public park spanning 10 hectares, offering a much-needed green space and recreational area. Today, Taman Waduk Pluit offers a vibrant space for residents and visitors alike, featuring exercise equipment, a basketball court, a jogging track, a theater, restrooms, and even a futsal field. It’s a place where you can enjoy the fresh air, admire the city skyline, and reflect on the remarkable transformation of what was once a forgotten swamp.
