Picture this. You are standing in Taman Jurong Singapore’s first housing estate. Built in 1963 it was designed to house the growing workforce of the Jurong Industrial Estate. Initially one and two-room flats were offered. Demand was low. People didn’t want to live so far from the rest of the island.

But Taman Jurong had a vision. It was more than just housing. It was about creating a community. Improved flats with better layouts appeared. Taller buildings changed the skyline. By 1968 all 4400 flats were occupied. Sixteen thousand people called Taman Jurong home.

Taman Jurong wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was about amenities. A community center opened in 1965. It hosted everything from basketball to sepak takraw. The National Library even used it for its mobile library. A Jurong Stadium was built in 1973. It hosted National Day celebrations and SAF parades.

Entertainment arrived too. Jurong Drive-in opened in 1971. It was Asia’s largest drive-in cinema. Families flocked to watch English and Hong Kong films under the stars. It was a unique experience. Sadly it closed in 1985. The novelty wore off. Air-conditioned cinemas became more popular.

And let’s not forget the food. Yung Sheng Food Centre opened in 1972. It was Singapore’s first hawker centre. Sixty stalls bustled with activity. Teochew fishball noodles were a favourite. The centre thrives today as Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre. It’s the result of three hawker centres merging. It has a courtyard that lets in natural sunlight. A great place to enjoy a meal.

Even nature found a place in Taman Jurong. Green spaces were planned from the start. A buffer zone separated the industrial and residential areas. Jurong Ice Skating Centre opened in 1974. It was a novelty. It was the first ice skating rink in Singapore and Southeast Asia. It closed in 1978. The novelty faded. Another ice skating rink opened later.

Taman Jurong’s story is one of transformation. From a sparsely populated area to a vibrant community. It’s a testament to vision and planning. It shows how Singapore built a modern nation. From humble beginnings Taman Jurong shows a remarkable journey. This is more than just a housing estate. It’s a living legacy.
