“A church built from the generosity of the community.” That’s the legacy of Talty Baptist Church. You might be surprised to know that this house of worship started its journey as a mission of the First Baptist Church of Forney in 1989. Imagine, back then, this land was simply a vision for a new ministry. The Baptist General Convention of Texas saw its potential and a dedicated group, led by individuals like Red Featherstone, set out to make it a reality. They secured a humble double-wide mobile home as their first sanctuary, dividing it between a worship space and Sunday school classrooms. On April 10th, 1989, the first official meeting of the Talty Baptist Mission filled that very space with over forty hopeful souls. The path wasn’t always easy. The very first planned meeting, on March 5th, 1989, was snowed out by an unexpected Texas ice storm! Despite the setback, within a year, the Talty Baptist Mission had welcomed 61 new members, with 21 baptisms taking place. The community came together, donating time, materials, and even expertise. A church in Port Arthur assisted with the framing, while a Baptist Men’s group from Waco tackled the drywall and wiring. One dedicated volunteer even took on the task of laying every brick, refusing any payment for their labor. By November 25th, 1990, a new chapter began. Talty Baptist Church stood proudly, a testament to the power of faith and community. It’s incredible to think that the very building you see before you was built on such humble beginnings. The spirit of Talty Baptist Church is truly inspiring.
