Etched in stone, the Takapuna War Memorial stands as a solemn reminder. It commemorates the brave individuals from this area who sacrificed their lives. These heroes served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam. This memorial is more than just a structure. It is a symbol of remembrance.

The dedication ceremony for the Takapuna War Memorial took place on November 11, 2002. The North Shore City Council building provided a backdrop for the event. A military officer laid a wreath. Guests and observers stood respectfully behind the memorial. The octagonal building nearby housed Massimo’s Cafe. It provided a comforting presence during the solemn occasion.

The Takapuna War Memorial Hall is conveniently located on The Strand. It is next to the Takapuna Library and the Auckland Council Service Centre. This hall serves as a versatile space. It hosts classes, workshops, events, and social gatherings. It is a vibrant hub for the community.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the area around Takapuna War Memorial as a strategic defense point. Fort Takapuna, with its commanding position, played a crucial role. It overlooked the Rangitoto Channel in the Hauraki Gulf. Maori inhabitants and later European settlers recognized its importance.

Fort Takapuna was known by several names. These include Fort Cautley, HMNZS Tamaki, and Narrow Neck. The original military title, Fort Takapuna, honored the point on which it stood. Twin six-inch disappearing guns once guarded the area. An underground magazine stored ammunition. Barracks, observation posts, and an engine room with searchlights completed the fort’s defenses.

In 2000, the Minister of Conservation, Sandra Lee, opened Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve. This was a significant addition to the conservation estate. Part of the land became a Historic Reserve. Another area was designated as a Recreation Reserve.

The fort’s design came from Major Tudor-Boddam of the Royal Artillery. It was built between 1886 and 1889. Fort Takapuna formed part of a chain of defenses around Auckland harbor. Other forts were built at North Head, Bastion Point, and Mount Victoria.

Inside the fort, ammunition trolleys ran on railway tracks in the tunnels. A well provided water. Outside, a barracks housed the soldiers. By 1922, the fort’s armament was obsolete. The guns were removed and later sold for scrap.

In 1926 and 1927, the old fort transformed into a naval ammunition storage area. The gun pits were roofed. A building was constructed next to the old barracks as part of the magazine complex. The concrete slide moved ammunition around. The fort stored 172 tons of ammunition.

The engine room powered the searchlights. These searchlights were used from 1899 until the end of World War II. The three white concrete structures on the cliff top formed the Examination Battery. Guns from the World War I battle cruiser HMS New Zealand were used here.

During World War I, a training camp was built at Fort Takapuna. It served as a training area for Maori and Cook Island reinforcements. In 1918, the camp housed German prisoners of war. In 1919, it became a hospital for flu victims.

In 1963, the Royal New Zealand Navy moved its training school to the fort. They built a new Gunnery School and set up an Officer Training School. Today, only the Officer and Trade Training schools remain.

The Takapuna War Memorial and its surroundings carry layers of history. It tells stories of defense, sacrifice, and community. Let us remember those who served. Let us appreciate the peace they fought to protect. Let us reflect on their bravery and dedication as we stand here today.
