Have you ever seen a gannet plunge-dive? Right here before you stands Tākāpu Rock a testament to the power and grace of these magnificent birds. The Australasian gannet also known as Tākāpu is a large seabird with an impressive 1.8-meter wingspan. These incredible creatures have a long history with the Māori people. Historically Māori would journey to the gannets’ breeding grounds collecting young birds for food. They also used the adult birds’ bones and plumage for various purposes.
The name gannet itself is fascinating. It comes from an old English word meaning masculine and brave. This reflects the gannets’ daring dives from great heights. Interestingly the gannet’s scientific name Morus comes from an ancient Greek word meaning foolish. This is because the young birds seemingly made no attempt to escape when collected for food.
While Tākāpu Rock itself may not be a breeding colony the gannets are often sighted nearby. The closest breeding colony is actually about 10 kilometers north at Farewell Spit in Golden Bay. This colony is quite large boasting around 5,000 breeding pairs. However this site faces challenges due to erosion. Conservation efforts are underway to see if another colony might be established at Separation Point a location with historical reports of gannet breeding. Tākāpu’s unique calls are a vital part of their social life. They use distinctive calls like a ‘urrah urrah’ to announce landing or during territorial displays. An ‘oo-ah’ signals take-off. These calls are crucial for communication within the colony and during mating rituals.
The Tākāpu’s diet primarily consists of fish such as pilchards anchovies barracouta mackerel and horse mackerel. They also consume squid. Their remarkable diving ability allows them to plunge from heights of 20-30 meters at speeds up to 145 kilometers per hour to catch their prey.
